Shrine Auditorium is a Moorish Revival theatre in South Los Angeles, California. The stage opening measures 100 feet across and 37 feet in height, with a stage depth of 72 feet.
A fire in 1920 destroyed the previous temple, prompting the Shriners to build a new structure on Figueroa Street. The opening took place in 1926 as headquarters for the Al Malaikah Temple Masonic lodge.
The building displays Arab-inspired towers and decorated arches that immediately point visitors to the Masonic style of the Shriners. Many interior details recall North African architecture and reinforce the impression of an Eastern fantasy.
The building sits in a residential neighborhood and is best reached by car or rideshare services, as public transport stops are farther away. Parking facilities occupy several levels around the building, making arrival easier during large events.
The ceiling holds an electric chandelier weighing five tons, suspended above the painted tent dome. The ceiling design imitates draped fabric panels made of plaster and gives the impression of a large circus tent.
