Jardinette Apartments

The Jardinette Apartments is a four-story residential building in Mid-Wilshire featuring continuous horizontal windows, flat roofs, and angular forms that follow International Style design principles. The facade shapes the street with clean, geometric lines.

Richard Neutra designed this building in 1928 as his first solo commission in the United States, creating one of the earliest International Style apartment complexes. The project launched his reputation as a modernist pioneer in California.

The building shows how modernist ideas entered residential architecture in 1920s California, changing the look of neighborhoods across the region.

The building is visible from the sidewalk and easily observed from street level. Early morning light strikes the facades at an angle, making architectural details clearer for visitors.

Despite decades of use, the building retains roughly 95% of its original wood framing structure. Small details like subway tiles and hexagonal floor patterns in interior spaces show how the original quality was carefully maintained.
