CBS Columbia Square, Historic broadcasting complex on Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, US
CBS Columbia Square is a broadcasting and television complex on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, made up of three buildings in International Style with Streamline Moderne elements. The facades display aluminum-framed glass walls and horizontal steel ribbon windows that give the ensemble its characteristic appearance.
William Lescaze designed the complex in 1937 as a broadcasting and television headquarters for CBS at a cost of two million dollars. The building marked the beginning of Hollywood's broadcasting center and underwent comprehensive restoration during the 2010s.
The glass walls and narrow steel windows reflect the transition between industrial function and the sleek modernism of the 1930s. Anyone looking at the facade can see the ambition to present broadcasting as a modern art form in a fitting setting.
The courtyard between the three buildings was landscaped during restoration and offers a quiet break between the facades. The windows and exterior concrete surfaces were also repaired.
Studio A contained specialized echo chambers that attracted numerous recording artists, including the Beach Boys, who used them for their signature sound. The acoustic design of these rooms shaped many recordings that later became famous.
