St. Andrews Bungalow Court, Historic bungalow court in Hollywood, California, US.
St. Andrews Bungalow Court is a historic residential complex in Hollywood made up of 15 Colonial Revival-style cottages arranged around a central communal courtyard. The small homes are located at 1514-1544 North St. Andrews Place and sit tightly together on a modest-sized lot, forming an enclosed court layout.
The complex was built between 1919 and 1920 by Fay Sudrow during a period of rapid growth and housing demand in Los Angeles. It was created at a time when bungalow courts were becoming a popular and practical housing solution for expanding urban areas.
The complex shows how individual property owners built and designed their own homes in the early 1900s, creating a neighborhood feel within one shared court. The layout around the central yard encouraged residents to interact and build community ties in a more intimate way than typical apartment buildings.
The entire site is small and easy to walk through, making it simple to view from the street or courtyard areas. Since it is a residential neighborhood, visitors should be respectful of residents and avoid trespassing on private property.
The court appeared in the 2007 film Alvin and the Chipmunks as the home of the main character Dave Seville. This film appearance brought the location to the attention of a much wider audience than it had received before.
