Earl Carroll Theatre, Television studio in Hollywood, US
The Earl Carroll Theatre is a building in Hollywood with Streamline Moderne architecture on Sunset Boulevard. The main hall features a 60-foot (18-meter) wide stage along with ceiling-mounted swings for performers.
The theater opened in December 1938 with a 20-foot neon portrait of performer Beryl Wallace on the facade. Over the following decades, the venue changed function several times before eventually serving as a television studio.
The building carries the name of its founder, a Broadway producer known for elaborate stage revues. After serving first as a dinner theater, the venue later became a taping location for teen series, preserving its 1930s architecture throughout the transition.
The venue served from 1997 to 2017 as a production facility for several Nickelodeon shows, including iCarly and Victorious. Today the building stands as a protected monument and can be viewed from outside.
The stage floor could rotate, allowing scenery to be changed during the performance. Additionally, the hall featured automatic rigging systems that accelerated the movement of decorations and props.
