Mae West moved into the penthouse when the building opened in 1930 and lived there until her death in 1980. Her manager and friend James Timony also lived in the building until 1954. Other residents at different times included Clark Gable, Ava Gardner and Anna Faris.

The building sits in an established residential neighborhood with good access to restaurants, shops, and cultural venues. Visitors can admire the exterior architecture from the street and explore the surrounding area on foot.

Mae West, who lived in the penthouse from 1930 until her death in 1980, rescued the building's owners from bankruptcy after they tried to bar her boyfriend, boxer William "Gorilla" Jones, from entering. Her manager James Timony lived there until 1954. The building was named a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 2003.
