Hollywood Walk of Fame, Entertainment monument in Hollywood, Los Angeles, US.
A 1.3-mile (2.1-kilometer) sidewalk displays over 2,600 brass stars embedded in terrazzo tiles, honoring achievements across various entertainment fields. Each star shows an honoree's name in pink terrazzo tiles surrounded by a brass ring. The installation extends along both sides of the street and includes sections on Vine Street. Many stars are positioned in front of historic theaters, shops, and neighborhood landmarks, creating a continuous monument throughout multiple blocks of the district.
The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce initiated the project in 1958 to revitalize the area after film studios relocated to other neighborhoods. E.M. Stuart designed the original terrazzo and brass stars. The first official ceremony honoring Joanne Woodward took place in 1960. The number of honorees grew steadily, with an average of two dozen new stars added annually. The project received designation as a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 1978 and National Register of Historic Places status in 2023.
Stars represent achievements in six categories: motion pictures, television, recording, radio, live theater, or sports entertainment, each identified by a bronze emblem. Installation requires nomination by a sponsor, committee approval, and a sponsorship fee of several thousand dollars. Unveiling ceremonies for new inductees regularly attract fans, media representatives, and industry figures, reinforcing the ongoing significance of this tradition within American entertainment culture and maintaining its relevance across generations.
The installation runs along Hollywood Boulevard from Gower Street to La Brea Avenue, with easy access via Metro Red Line at Hollywood/Vine station. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes, as walking the entire length takes approximately 45 minutes. Parking is available in several public garages nearby. The sidewalk is accessible daily on foot. Maps showing locations of specific stars are available online or at visitor centers. Sunrise or early morning hours offer fewer crowds for photography and exploration of individual honoree locations.
Four stars were stolen since the installation began, including Gregory Peck's marker, which disappeared from near Gower Street in 2005. Gene Autry is the only person with five stars, one in every category except sports entertainment. Mohamed Ali initially declined a sidewalk star because he did not want people walking on his name, later accepting one mounted on a building wall. Maintenance costs are covered by sponsorship fees rather than public funds, ensuring the project remains self-sustaining.
