Calexico and Mexicali face each other across a desert boundary between California and Baja California, forming a connected border zone. These twin cities sit in the Salton Trough and serve as a working hub for people and goods moving between two countries.
This region started as a tent settlement in 1899 and quickly grew into an agricultural center through irrigation projects by the Imperial Land Company. Water and transport systems developed at that time made the transformation from desert to functioning border area possible.
Chinese immigrants who settled here in the early 1900s left their mark on local food traditions and business practices that remain visible today. They established shops and eateries that shaped the character of both communities.
The border crossing operates daily with multiple checkpoints handling foot traffic and vehicles. Plan extra time for processing and have valid travel documents ready when crossing.
A strong earthquake in April 2010 caused major damage to infrastructure on both sides of the border. The rebuilding efforts afterward have shaped the face of both cities and show their resilience.
