El Vallecito

El Vallecito is an archaeological site featuring 23 rock formations adorned with ancient paintings. These rocks display depictions of human figures, geometric patterns, and animal representations created over centuries.

The paintings were created by the Kumeyaay people who inhabited this region for thousands of years. They represent a period when this group controlled extensive territories spanning from Baja California to San Diego.

The red, black, and white rock paintings show artistic expressions of the Kumeyaay people who made their home in this region. Figures like El Diablito and El Tiburon remain visible symbols of their creative tradition.

The site is accessible via Federal Highway 2D, with a dirt road beginning after the Vallecitos exit. A hiking trail then leads visitors to the rock paintings and formations.

During winter solstice mornings, sunlight interacts with the El Diablito painting, creating a natural illumination effect on the figure's eyes. This rare occurrence reveals the Kumeyaay understanding of celestial movements.
