The facility was founded in the 1950s and was originally known as Black Canyon Shooting Range. It gained international attention by hosting the 1970 ISSF World Championships.
The facility offers shooting education courses and hunter safety programs led by certified instructors throughout the year. Visitors can benefit from specialized training that teaches safe handling and shooting techniques.
Visiting is best done Tuesday through Friday when the range operates continuously throughout the day. Weekend access requires advance reservations, and hours vary across different shooting areas, especially for clay target sections.
It was the first government-operated shooting range to receive a Five Star rating from the National Association of Shooting Ranges. This recognition reflects the high standards of maintenance and operation that visitors can observe directly.
