Templo de Santa Rita de Casia

Templo de Santa Rita de Casia, Baroque temple in Chihuahua, Mexico

Templo de Santa Rita de Casia is a Baroque building with a rectangular plan defined by carved stone details and structural divisions. A triangular pediment tops the facade, while the tower rises in two square sections separated by decorative cornices, and the interior opens into a single nave.

Construction started in 1731 when Nicolasa de Orio y Zubiate promised to build a chapel after recovering from illness. This act of devotion led to the creation of a sanctuary dedicated to Saint Rita that has remained active for nearly three centuries.

The sanctuary has served as a place of devotion for centuries, with annual celebrations on May 22nd honoring Saint Rita through religious ceremonies. Visitors can observe how local faithful gather to express their veneration through prayer and ritual participation.

The sanctuary is located in the Santa Rita neighborhood and welcomes visitors during regular services to explore the interior spaces. Plan to visit respectfully and be aware that ceremonies may limit access to certain areas at specific times.

The interior holds paintings from the 18th century, including several works depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary. A notable work from 1789 portrays Saint Quiteria with particular artistic attention to detail and composition.
