Michigan-Dartmouth-MIT Observatory

The Michigan-Dartmouth-MIT Observatory is a research center on Kitt Peak near Tucson with two reflecting telescopes of different sizes. The Hiltner Telescope has a 2.4-meter aperture, while the McGraw-Hill Telescope measures 1.3 meters, and both are equipped for detailed celestial studies.

The McGraw-Hill Telescope was relocated from Ann Arbor to this site in 1975, marking the establishment of the location as a research facility. The Hiltner Telescope was added later and began operations in 1986.

The facility serves as a hub for astronomical collaboration between major universities, where students and researchers work together on celestial projects. This partnership has trained new generations of astronomers over the decades.

The site is located on a mountain, so the best access is during daylight hours when conditions for reaching the facility are optimal. The high elevation and remote location require careful planning for a visit.

Asteroid number 4432 was named McGraw-Hill in 1992, honoring the scientific importance of the telescope. This recognition shows how the facility has contributed to astronomical discovery.
