ARO 12m Radio Telescope, Radio telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory, Arizona, United States
The ARO 12-meter Radio Telescope is an observational instrument at Kitt Peak with a primary reflector that captures radio signals from celestial objects. The facility operates nearly year-round, collecting data about molecular formations and structures in space through continuous radio wave detection.
The telescope was built in 1967 by the National Radio Astronomy Observatory as a 36-foot structure. It was reconstructed in 1984 to reach its present size.
The University of Arizona operates this facility through the Steward Observatory, serving as a research hub for astronomers and graduate students. The telescope functions as part of a collaborative scientific community at the summit where multiple instruments work together.
The telescope sits at high elevation where conditions are ideal for observations. Visitors should be prepared for temperature changes and thinner air typical of mountain locations.
In 2013 the telescope received an upgrade with advanced antenna technology that improved surface precision. This enhancement allowed the instrument to detect even fainter cosmic signals than previously possible.
