Cochise Hotel, Hotel in den Vereinigten Staaten
The Cochise Hotel is a railroad-era building in Cochise, Arizona that dates back to 1882. It features the False front architectural style of that period and originally served as lodging for railroad travelers, while also functioning as a post office, laundry, and Wells Fargo banking office at different times.
John Rath, a railroad telegraph operator and the town's founder, built the hotel in 1882 to serve railroad travelers. By 1896 it took on the role of a post office and became a key part of daily life in Cochise.
The hotel shares its name with the Apache leader Cochise and connects visitors to the region's indigenous heritage. For decades it served as a gathering place where travelers and local residents came together, making it a social center for the community.
The hotel sits near where the old railroad depot once stood, making it easy to locate. Visitors can tour the building, stay overnight in its historic setting, or arrange events and retreats at the location.
Big Nose Kate, the famous sidekick of Doc Holliday, worked at the hotel starting in 1899, well after Holliday himself had died years earlier. She left her own mark on the hotel's story, separate from her well-known connection to Old West legend.
