Cosmic Campground, International Dark Sky Sanctuary in Catron County, US
The Cosmic Campground covers 30 acres within Gila National Forest, offering unobstructed views of stars and celestial objects in complete natural darkness.
The site received its International Dark Sky Sanctuary designation after extensive darkness measurements conducted over several months, becoming the second such location worldwide.
Astronomers, researchers, and nature enthusiasts gather at the campground to observe astronomical phenomena and participate in educational programs about nocturnal environments.
The campground, situated at 6,500 feet elevation, provides basic facilities including designated sites, picnic areas, and restrooms, operating on a first-come, first-served basis.
Visitors can experience the rare phenomenon of seeing their own shadows cast by starlight due to the exceptional darkness of the night sky.
