Corn Ranch, spaceport operated by Blue Origin
Corn Ranch, also called Launch Site One, is a spaceport in Culberson County, Texas, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) north of Van Horn. The site has a launch pad, vehicle processing buildings, and test stands for rocket engines that run on different types of fuel.
Jeff Bezos bought the land in 2004 and converted it from a corn farm into a spaceport, with testing beginning around 2005. In 2021, the first crewed spaceflight took place when Bezos and three others briefly traveled to space.
The name Corn Ranch comes from its past as a corn farm before becoming a spaceport, reflecting the transformation from agriculture to space exploration. The site shows how a remote rural area has become a hub for private space travel.
The site sits in a remote desert area, which makes it safe for rocket launches and offers clear skies for operations. The location is several hours away from larger cities by car, so visitors should plan extra time for travel to reach the site.
The launch facilities initially used liquid hydrogen and oxygen as fuel, then switched to methane and oxygen, allowing more cost-effective operations. This fuel change shows how the site has evolved technologically to support modern spaceflight goals.
