Hermano Pedro's Hospital

Hermano Pedro's Hospital is a restored colonial complex in central Antigua Guatemala housing multiple treatment rooms, three modern operating theaters, and residential quarters. The buildings are arranged around courtyards and blend period architecture with practical spaces for medical work.

Dominican friars founded the institution in 1654, opening it in 1663 to provide medical care for the poor and destitute of colonial Guatemala. Over the colonial period it became a central place for health care in Antigua.

Franciscan friars continue to serve vulnerable people here through daily medical and social programs. Their presence shapes how the place functions, with care extending beyond treatment to include shelter and rehabilitation.

The building sits on Calle Oriente 6a and is easily accessible from Antigua's center. Keep in mind it operates as a functioning medical facility, so visiting may be subject to time constraints or scheduling restrictions.

More than forty international medical teams visit each year to perform operations at minimal cost. This ongoing work shows how the place continues to function as a hub for emergency medical assistance.
