Nebaj

Nebaj is an archaeological site in the western highlands of Guatemala where remnants of Maya structures are scattered across the landscape, interspersed with cultivated fields and private properties. The location sits at roughly 1900 meters elevation and contains pottery fragments and stone foundations from different periods.

The site was an important center during the Maya Classic period between 900 and 1200 AD, known for producing fine pottery and carved stone works. The excavated objects reveal that the community here maintained significant artistic and craft skills during that era.

The site reflects the artistic traditions of Maya communities, with local people maintaining connections to the ancestral heritage visible in pottery fragments and carved stone elements scattered across the landscape.

Visitors should arrange time with local guides who know the terrain and can negotiate access to structures on private land. The hilly landscape with uneven paths requires sturdy footwear and moderate physical fitness.

A particularly fine ceramic vessel discovered at this location now resides in a major British museum and is considered one of the finest examples of Maya craftsmanship. This find demonstrates just how remarkable the artistic skill of this community was.
