Glover's Reef, Marine reserve in Caribbean Sea, Belize.

The coral reef system spans 135 square miles with 800 patch reefs surrounding a central lagoon filled with diverse marine species.

The reef received its name from John Glover, a pirate who used the location to raid Spanish merchant ships during the 1750s.

The marine reserve supports over one hundred local fishermen who maintain traditional fishing practices under strict environmental regulations.

Visitors can reach the reef exclusively by boat from mainland Belize, with multiple tour operators offering diving and snorkeling expeditions.

The structure represents one of three atolls in Belize's waters and contains the Caribbean's largest remaining Nassau grouper spawning site.
