Gladden Spit and Silk Cayes Marine Reserve, Marine reserve at Gladden Spit and Silk Cayes, Belize
The Gladden Spit and Silk Cayes Marine Reserve is a protected area off the southern coast of Belize, featuring three small islands and steep underwater slopes that support diverse marine ecosystems. The reserve protects critical spawning grounds and feeding habitats for multiple fish and shark species.
The reserve was established in 2000 to protect critical marine habitats and spawning grounds for fish species. It was created based on recognition of the area's importance for natural reproduction cycles.
Local communities through the Southern Environmental Association actively participate in managing and preserving this section of the Belize Barrier Reef system.
The reserve can be accessed from Placencia, which serves as the main departure point for visits to the area. Travel to the site is best planned between March and June when marine activity is most visible.
This location represents the only known site worldwide where traditional fishing activities coincide with natural whale shark feeding patterns during fish spawning events.
