Iglesia de San Francisco de la Montaña, Colonial church in Veraguas Province, Panama.
Iglesia de San Francisco de la Montaña is a colonial church in Veraguas Province with a white bell tower entrance and stone structure. Two side entrances supported by brick columns provide additional access points to the interior spaces.
The building was constructed in 1727 and received national monument status in 1937 through Law 29. This protection was reaffirmed four years later under Law 68.
Inside, nine hand-carved altarpieces were created by indigenous artisans, blending religious imagery with local figures and customs. These works show how European and American artistic traditions came together in a single place of worship.
The church is accessible from the Panamerican Highway near Santiago, making it reachable by vehicle or organized tour. Take time to explore both the exterior architecture and interior spaces at a comfortable pace.
The main altar is made from 480 individual pieces of ash and cedar wood, all handcrafted locally. This sets it apart from many other colonial churches that imported their altars from Europe.
