Purificación, Municipality in Tolima Department, Colombia
Purificación is a municipality located in the southeastern region of Tolima Department at an elevation of 167 meters. It covers 422 square kilometers divided into 46 rural districts, with agriculture shaped by rice, sesame, coffee, plantains, cotton, cocoa, and various fruits.
The municipality was founded in 1664 by Diego de Ospina Maldonado and took on important administrative roles in regional history. It served as the capital of Nueva Granada in 1831 and remained Tolima's capital until 1864.
The Municipal Festival and the Southeastern Tolima Folk Festival bring traditional events with bullfights, horsemanship, and music performances to the region. These celebrations shape how people gather and show their connection to local customs.
As a rural municipality, it is reached most easily by road connections that link the various districts throughout the area. The best time to visit depends on avoiding rainy periods, when some roads become more difficult to travel.
The Italia district carries its name with local belief in Italian roots, though no historical evidence supports this connection. This belief shows how communities create and preserve their own stories.
