Réserve nationale naturelle de Nukak

The Nukak National Natural Reserve covers 874,891 hectares of tropical forest with rivers, streams, and diverse plant species between the Guaviare and Inírida rivers.

The Colombian government established the reserve in 1993, following advocacy by the National Indigenous Organization of Colombia, and expanded its territory in 1997.

The reserve contains the ancestral lands of the Nukak indigenous people, who maintained a nomadic lifestyle gathering fruits, hunting with blowguns, and building temporary shelters.

Access to the reserve requires prior coordination with local authorities and indigenous communities, as infrastructure remains limited to protect ecological balance.

The reserve represents one of Colombia's last territories where indigenous groups maintained isolation until the late 1980s, preserving traditional hunting and gathering practices.
