Fontibón, Administrative locality in western Bogotá, Colombia
Fontibón is an administrative locality in western Bogotá that spans from built-up urban neighborhoods to rural areas. Situated at about 2548 meters elevation, it contains residential districts, commercial zones, and El Dorado International Airport.
The name comes from the Muisca cacique Huintiva, and the territory served as an entry point for conquistador Gonzalo Jimenez de Quesada during Bogotá's founding. During colonial times, the region was divided into 22 capitanias, administrative units that reflected the Spanish governance system.
The locality maintains records of 22 historical capitanias from the sixteenth century, representing administrative divisions during the colonial period of Colombia.
The locality is easily accessible by public transport, and visitors can explore different neighborhoods ranging from busy commercial areas to quieter residential districts. It is helpful to be aware of the higher elevation when moving through the more extended areas.
The locality houses both the headquarters of regional airline SATENA and El Dorado International Airport, making it a central aviation hub. This concentration of air transport infrastructure significantly shapes the character of the area.
