Pontifical Xavierian University, Catholic university in Chapinero, Bogotá, Colombia
The Pontifical Xavierian University is a Catholic institution in the Chapinero district of Bogotá, set on a sprawling campus with dozens of buildings. The grounds include classrooms, administrative offices, research facilities, and communal spaces spread across different zones.
The College of the Society of Jesus was founded in the early 17th century and gained the right to confer academic degrees in 1623. After a long interruption, the institution resumed operations in 1937.
The institution takes its name from Francis Xavier, one of the founders of the Jesuit order, and follows the Ignatian tradition of the Society. The libraries serve students and researchers working on religious and philosophical questions.
The campus can be explored on foot, though some areas are quite far apart and built on slopes. The main entrances are located on Carrera Séptima and provide access to the different faculties.
The university publishes research through open access and runs institutes devoted to Muisca culture and environmental issues. These areas connect academic work with regional concerns.
