Cundinamarca Department

Cundinamarca Department extends across 22,623 square kilometers of central Colombia, surrounding the capital city of Bogotá at an elevation of 3,341 meters.

The department was established in 1857 as one of the original nine states of Colombia, with its name deriving from Kuntur marqa, meaning condor's nest.

The department incorporates 116 municipalities, each maintaining their individual traditions through local festivals, traditional music performances, and regional gastronomy celebrations.

Visitors can reach Cundinamarca through major highways connecting to Bogotá, with regular bus services operating between municipalities and the Salt Cathedral in Zipaquirá.

The department contains the Tequendama Falls, where the Bogotá River drops 157 meters through a natural gorge in the Eastern Cordillera mountain range.
