Tequendama Province, Administrative province in Cundinamarca Department, Colombia
Tequendama Province is an administrative region in Cundinamarca with La Mesa as its capital, situated at about 1,200 meters elevation in the Andean valleys. The area spreads across several municipalities with farmland, small towns, and green countryside that characterizes much of the landscape.
The region became known to science in 1783 when naturalist José Celestino Mutis launched a major botanical expedition to study the local plants and animals. This expedition helped document the flora and fauna of the highland areas for scientific understanding.
The people of La Mesa keep traditional farming alive through seasonal harvests and local gatherings that bring the community together. You can see how these practices shape daily life in the towns and countryside.
The region is best reached by road from Bogotá toward the southern valleys, with La Mesa well connected by local buses. The area offers basic services like shops, markets, and small accommodations for travelers.
The area contains fossils of Eonatator coellensis, an ancient marine reptile that lived when these highland regions were once covered by seas. These paleontological finds reveal how dramatically the geology of the Andean region has changed over time.
