Laguna Verde, Natural lake in Ubalá, Colombia
Laguna Verde is a mountain lake in Ubalá, Cundinamarca Department, sitting at about 2000 meters elevation. The water stretches roughly 300 meters in length and reaches about 40 meters at its widest point, colored green by minerals and living organisms in the water.
The lake has been an important place for the Muisca people for centuries, an indigenous group that lived in this region. The Chío people performed ceremonies there and made offerings to water deities.
Local people speak of a golden chicken and hidden treasures that were supposedly thrown into the lake during the Spanish conquest. These stories connect the place to ancient rituals that took place here.
The lake sits to the west of Ubalá's town center and is accessible by roads through the surrounding area. Visitors should be ready for hilly terrain and mountain weather that can shift quickly at this elevation.
The green water gets its color not just from algae but from a special mix of minerals and biological matter that gives the lake its distinctive look. This natural chemistry is what makes it stand out in the region.
