Ubalá, Administrative municipality in Cundinamarca, Colombia.
Ubalá is a municipality in Cundinamarca spanning mountainous terrain in the Eastern Ranges of the Colombian Andes. The area divides administratively into two separate zones, each with its own administrative center serving different communities.
Founded on October 23, 1846, the municipality emerged in a region previously inhabited by indigenous Muisca, Tegua, and Guayupe communities. The establishment followed centuries of occupation by these different ethnic groups.
Mining communities here practice traditional extraction methods for emeralds, iron ore, sandstone, clay, and salt that have shaped local livelihoods for generations.
The mountainous landscape can be challenging to navigate and local guidance is helpful when exploring the area. It is wise to allow extra time for travel and ask locals about routes before heading into the region.
This is the only municipality in Cundinamarca split into two non-contiguous territories separated by natural boundaries. This unusual administrative structure makes governance and daily life for residents distinctly complex.
