Grecia Canton, Administrative canton in Alajuela Province, Costa Rica.
Grecia Canton is an administrative territory in Alajuela Province that spreads across the southwestern slopes of Poas Volcano and contains seven districts. The territory sits at about 974 meters in elevation and covers approximately 141 square kilometers.
This administrative territory was officially established on 27 July 1867 through decree number 20 and named after the European country of Greece. The naming after the ancient land reflects the classical influences that were widespread in Costa Rica at that time.
The city of Grecia is home to an unusual metal church, the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes, built with prefabricated steel plates. This structure shows how the community embraced innovative materials to create its religious spaces.
The region is connected through several national routes, including Route 1, Route 107, and Route 118, which ease movement across Alajuela Province. These road connections make it straightforward to travel between the seven districts and to neighboring areas.
The Grande River forms the southern border while the Poás and Prendes Rivers establish the eastern boundary, creating natural waterways that define the territory. These rivers shape the landscape and support diverse ecosystems throughout the region.
