Laguna Verde, Glacial lake in Sierra Nevada National Park, Venezuela
Laguna Verde is a glacial lake situated in Sierra Nevada National Park at approximately 3,900 meters elevation, nestled below Pico Humboldt. The water appears green due to suspended glacial sediment that flows continuously from the surrounding peaks.
The lake formed through glacial activity as the La Corona glacier carved its path between Humboldt and Bonpland peaks over thousands of years. This geological process created the basin that continues to collect water from surrounding snowmelt and ice.
Local communities maintain traditional practices around the lake, which serves as a natural boundary and water source for the Merida mountain populations.
The high altitude demands good physical fitness and time to acclimatize before attempting the hike to reach the lake. Weather conditions change rapidly at this elevation, so warm layers and wind protection are essential for the visit.
The lake receives a steady flow of meltwater from the La Corona glacier through the El Suero lagoon before it eventually feeds into the Chama River system. This continuous water connection makes the lake an active part of a larger watershed rather than an isolated pool.
