North Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region
North Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region, Autonomous region in northeastern Nicaragua
The North Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region encompasses 33,106 square kilometers of tropical rainforests, mangrove swamps, and Caribbean coastline with Puerto Cabezas as its capital.
The region emerged from the former Zelaya Department through the Autonomy Statute of September 1987, granting self-governance rights to local communities.
Indigenous groups including Miskito, Mayangna, and Creole communities maintain their distinct languages, traditions, and governance systems throughout the eight municipalities.
The regional economy relies on fishing activities, particularly shrimp and lobster harvesting, along with agricultural production of cocoa, coconut, and palm oil.
The Regional Council operates with multiple official languages, including Miskito Coast Creole, Rama Cay Creole, Mayangna, Garifuna, and Spanish, reflecting its multicultural population.
