Chimichagua, Municipality in Cesar Department, Colombia.
Chimichagua is a municipality in Cesar Department where roughly one third of the territory consists of the Cienaga de Zapatosa marshes and their waters. The remaining land contains agricultural areas and divides into nine administrative districts called corregimientos.
Jose Fernando de Mier y Guerra founded the municipality on December 8, 1748, naming it Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción. This establishment occurred during Spain's colonial period in the region.
The municipality takes its name from the Chimila indigenous people who once lived between the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the Serranía del Perijá. Local traditions and the way residents connect with the land still reflect this ancestral heritage today.
The nine administrative divisions are Candelaria, El Guamo, Las Vegas, Mindinguilla, Saloa, Sempegua, Soledad, La Mata, and El Jobo. Navigating the area becomes easier when you use these districts as reference points for exploring different parts.
The territory remains sparsely populated, creating a deeply rural character shaped by farming and fishing practices. This low density of people means vast stretches of nature remain largely untouched and quiet.
