Lake Zirahuén, Endorheic lake in Salvador Escalante, Mexico.

Lake Zirahuén is an endorheic lake in the Salvador Escalante region with a sandy bottom and deep waters that stretch across a large area. Mountains rise around the shoreline, densely covered with pine and oak forests that create a green backdrop.

The lake was once part of a larger water system connecting several lakes in the region through the Lerma River. Over time it became isolated, developing into a self-contained basin that remains separated from the other bodies of water.

The name Zirahuén comes from the Purépecha language and means 'mirror of the gods', reflecting the spiritual connection local people maintain with these waters. Local legends speak of Princess Eréndira transforming into a mermaid, a story that continues to hold meaning for those who visit.

The lake provides several wooden docks and access points around the shoreline for swimming, kayaking, and walking trails. The best time to visit is during the dry season when the paths around the water are in good condition.

The lake is home to the Zirahuén allotica, a rare fish species found only in these waters and nowhere else in the world. This species serves as living evidence of the lake's ecological uniqueness and its long isolation from other water systems.
