Nuevo San Juan Parangaricutiro is the municipal seat in Michoacán situated on elevated terrain ranging from 1,873 to 2,155 meters in the state's western region. The settlement is home to Purépecha residents who manage extensive forest areas and provide services to the local population.
The original community was relocated in 1943 after the Parícutin volcano eruption buried the village under lava and ash. Reestablishing at this elevated location allowed the community to preserve its identity and rebuild.
