Nuevo San Juan Parangaricutiro

Nuevo San Juan Parangaricutiro is the municipal seat in Michoacán situated on elevated terrain ranging from 1,873 to 2,155 meters in the state's western region. The settlement is home to Purépecha residents who manage extensive forest areas and provide services to the local population.

The original community was relocated in 1943 after the Parícutin volcano eruption buried the village under lava and ash. Reestablishing at this elevated location allowed the community to preserve its identity and rebuild.

The Purépecha community here maintains traditional land stewardship methods while operating modern forestry operations. This blend of ancestral knowledge and contemporary practices shapes daily life and how residents relate to the surrounding natural environment.

The location sits at high elevation, so warm clothing is advisable especially during cooler months. Basic services and information are available through the local municipal offices.

The settlement produces roughly 65,000 cubic meters of certified sustainable timber annually, which is processed into construction materials and handcrafted furniture. This forest production is a major economic force for the community and its residents.
