Colonia Roma, Art district in Cuauhtémoc, Mexico City, Mexico
Colonia Roma is a neighborhood in Cuauhtémoc, Mexico City, known for its architecture and cultural life. Tree-lined streets host Art Nouveau villas, Neo-Colonial buildings, contemporary galleries, restaurants and independent fashion boutiques.
The neighborhood developed in the early 1900s with grand residences for the Mexican elite. After the 1985 earthquake, many buildings were renovated and the area shifted toward a cultural center.
The Casa Lamm Cultural Center occupies a restored mansion from the early twentieth century and hosts art exhibitions, literary events and courses year-round. Visitors often stop by the courtyard café between gallery rooms.
Several metro stations, including Insurgentes and Centro Médico, connect the neighborhood to other parts of Mexico City. Most streets are easy to walk and many galleries and shops open in the late morning.
Every Saturday and Sunday, local vendors fill Plaza Río de Janeiro with handmade goods and plants. A replica of Michelangelo's David stands at the center of the square.
