Mercado Roma, Food market in Colonia Roma, Mexico City, Mexico
Mercado Roma is a food market in Colonia Roma, Mexico City, spread across three floors with around fifty vendor stalls arranged in an organic, non-linear layout on the ground level. The spatial design includes an open patio area and multiple floors that create separate zones for market shopping, restaurants, and bars within a single venue.
The space was originally an industrial area housing Bar Leon before being transformed into a modern market in 2014. The renovation by architect Michel Rojkind repurposed the building as a gathering place centered on food and local producers.
The market blends Mexican cooking traditions with contemporary food culture, where local producers sell handcrafted cheeses, wines, and specialty items that reflect regional pride. Vendors actively engage with visitors, sharing stories about their products and turning shopping into a genuine exchange between makers and customers.
The ground floor and patio operate from 9:00 AM to 9:30 PM, while restaurants and bars upstairs stay open until 2:00 AM. The layout is easy to navigate on foot, and signage helps visitors find specific vendor stalls or dining options.
A vertical garden surrounds the open-air space and allows the market to sell fresh produce grown directly on site. This integration of growing and selling in one place sets it apart from typical market experiences in the city.
