Acolman Municipality, Administrative municipality in State of Mexico, Mexico
Acolman is an administrative municipality in the State of Mexico that covers elevated terrain across the region. It encompasses over sixty communities, with the town of Acolman serving as the administrative center.
The settlement originated in the eighth century as a trading center established by the Acolhuas, a Chichimeca group, before falling under Aztec control in 1396. Spanish colonization later transformed the region, reshaping its religious and architectural character.
The former monastery of San Agustín beside the main plaza displays religious artworks and colonial architecture from the 16th century. This structure remains central to how the community gathers and marks important occasions.
The municipality provides essential services including water supply, public safety, and street maintenance across all its communities. Visitors should note that the terrain is elevated and typically cooler and drier than lower-lying areas.
Archaeological excavations in Tepexpan have uncovered human remains dating back more than twelve thousand years. These discoveries connect the modern municipality to one of the earliest human presences in the region.
