Tehuacán

Tehuacán is a city in the state of Puebla in central Mexico, spreading across the valley of the Sierra Madre Oriental. The city sits at roughly 5200 feet (1600 meters) elevation and is surrounded by dry mountains and hills that shape the climate and landscape of the region.

The city was founded as a Spanish settlement in 1540 and officially received city status in 1660 during colonial times. This early development shaped the architecture and layout that remain visible in the historic neighborhoods today.

The Festival Internacional de Tehuacán 1660 presents regional music, dance performances, and exhibitions that reflect local traditions throughout the year.

The city connects to Mexico City and Puebla via highways and railways, making it accessible for travelers. The dry climate calls for light clothing and sun protection, especially when walking through town or exploring the surrounding areas.

The nearby Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Biosphere Reserve is home to more than two hundred species of cactus and serves as a key site for botanical research. Visitors can take walks to see the exceptional plant diversity and arid landscapes of this protected area.
