Actopan is the municipal seat of Actopan Municipality, located in the state of Veracruz, on Mexico's Gulf coast. The town sits in a low-lying area shaped by rivers and wetlands that run through the surrounding land.
The area was originally home to Totonac communities before Spanish forces arrived in the early 16th century under Juan Gonzalez Ponce de Leon. The colonial period reshaped the settlement and left a lasting mark on the region's social structure.
