The municipality of Actopan extends across 280 square kilometers of central-eastern Mexico at an elevation of 252 meters above sea level.
The region was originally inhabited by indigenous Otomi people before the Spanish colonization began in the early 1520s with Juan Gonzalez Ponce de Leon.
The name Actopan originates from Nahuatl words Atoctli and Pan, meaning a settlement built on firm, fertile, and humid terrain.
Located 120 kilometers north of Mexico City and 37 kilometers from Pachuca de Soto, Actopan maintains regular transportation connections to both urban centers.
The population census of 2020 recorded 32,276 inhabitants in Actopan, representing 52.91 percent of the total municipal population.
