Macuspana, Municipal seat in Tabasco, Mexico
Macuspana is the municipal seat of a district bearing the same name in the state of Tabasco in southeastern Mexico. The municipality contains both urban zones and smaller surrounding villages and settlements.
The municipality was established on February 17, 1665, marking the start of formal administrative organization in this colonial region. Since then, it has developed into an important local center of government.
The name Macuspana comes from different linguistic roots: Nahuatl speakers interpreted it as "place of five sweepings," while the Zoque language translates it as "where the priest goes." These overlapping linguistic interpretations show the mixed indigenous heritage of the region.
The town center is easy to explore on foot and offers basic services, local shops, and markets. The best time to visit is during the drier season, as the region deals with humidity and occasional flooding during rainy months.
This is the birthplace of Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who was born in the community of San Carlos, also known as Benito Juárez. This connection has brought national attention to the locality.
