Honey Island Swamp, Protected swamp in St. Tammany Parish, United States.
Honey Island Swamp is a wetland area in eastern Louisiana situated between Lake Borgne and the Pearl River. The terrain is covered by dense, wet forest and supports alligators, turtles, and numerous bird species that live throughout the landscape.
This river swamp was used for centuries by Native American tribes as a source of food and other resources. Later, in the 1700s, European settlers began to establish themselves in the region.
Local storytellers have long shared accounts of a mysterious two-legged creature said to inhabit the densest sections of the swamp. These tales remain part of regional folklore and shape how people connect with the place today.
The area is best explored through guided boat tours available year-round. Bring waterproof clothing and insect protection, since the wet environment requires appropriate gear for a comfortable visit.
Much of this swamp falls under a special protection program that makes it one of the most carefully preserved natural habitats in Louisiana. This protection allows the environment to remain largely undisturbed by human activity.
