Helena, city in Alabama, United States
Helena is a small city in Shelby County, Alabama, that grew from a simple crossroads settlement called Cove. It developed around a railroad station and now balances historic downtown areas with modern neighborhoods and shopping districts.
The settlement started as Cove and was renamed Hillsboro in 1856 when a steel mill was built for the Civil War effort. After it was destroyed in 1865, the town rebuilt around a new railroad station that became central to its growth and recovery.
Helena takes its name from Helen Lee, the fiancée of the engineer who built the train station that shaped the town's growth. This personal story remains woven into how residents think about their city's origins.
The city is easily accessible via Highways 261 and 31 and sits close to Interstate 65 for quick travel to Birmingham. The nearest major airport is about 20 miles away and is a straightforward drive.
A major tornado destroyed parts of the city in 1933 and killed 13 people, but Helena recovered and continued to grow afterward. This resilience continues to shape the community's sense of perseverance today.
