Tinglewood Carvings, Wood art collection in Orr Park, Montevallo, United States
Tinglewood Carvings is a collection of over 50 wood sculptures carved into dead cedar trees along the paths and Shoal Creek in Orr Park. The carvings feature different subjects and remain integrated into the park's landscape year-round.
The project began in 1993 when Tim Tingle received permission to transform storm-damaged trees into artworks rather than remove them. This initiative established an outdoor sculpture collection that has continued to grow over time.
The carvings depict figures from mythology and daily life that visitors encounter while walking through the park trails. These works have become rooted in local artistic practice and draw woodcarvers from the region to share their craft.
The grounds are open to visitors daily throughout the day, allowing people to walk the park paths at their own pace. Access is straightforward on foot and easy to navigate without special preparation.
Many of the carvings came from an annual festival where local artists gather to create new works in the existing trees. This makes the collection an ongoing art project that changes and grows over time.
