Alabama National Cemetery, Military cemetery in Montevallo, United States.
The Alabama National Cemetery is a burial ground south of Birmingham that serves veterans and their eligible family members. The grounds span hundreds of acres and provide space for different types of burial arrangements.
The site was officially established in 2009 following the National Cemetery Expansion Act of 2003, which responded to growing demand for veteran burial spaces. Its opening came during a period of increased need for burial sites.
The land once held importance for Muskogee tribes before becoming a national memorial space. Visitors walking through can sense this shift from an earlier indigenous settlement to a place of remembrance today.
The grounds are open to visitors from sunrise to sunset, while the administration office operates during weekday business hours. Plan enough time to explore the expansive grounds and visit different areas of the site.
The site was originally designed to hold a thousand in-ground cremations and a thousand casket burials. Later expansions substantially grew the capacity to meet continuing demand.
