Caacupé

Caacupé is a town nestled in a valley within the Altos Mountains, where a large Basilica stands at the central plaza. The surrounding landscape features green hills, and the town serves as a center for religious gatherings.

The area had settlements as early as the 17th century, but the town was formally established in 1770. This long connection to the region helped it grow into a place of increasing importance.

The Basilica shapes religious life in the town and draws visitors throughout the year for processions and prayers. Craft vendors line the streets selling religious items and souvenirs, showing how deeply this devotion is woven into the local economy.

The town connects to Asunción via paved highways and sits roughly an hour east of the capital. Visitors find basic accommodation, restaurants, and street vendors, especially around the main plaza.

Each year in December, hundreds of thousands of believers journey to the town for celebrations, temporarily swelling its population. This massive gathering makes December the busiest time of the year.
