Mount Pelion West

Mount Pelion West is a mountain summit in Tasmania's Central Highlands that rises to 1,560 meters above sea level. The peak is defined by extensive dolerite rock formations that give it a distinctive blocky appearance.

The first documented ascent took place in 1946, when the climber encountered thick vegetation and large boulder fields during the journey. This early expedition established knowledge about the mountain's challenging terrain.

The mountain region holds significance for Aboriginal communities who maintained sustainable relationships with the land before European settlement arrived in Tasmania.

This climb is demanding and requires experience, so allow plenty of time and preparation. Good footwear and sure footing are essential for safely navigating the steep and rocky sections.

The ascent requires navigating through roughly 500 meters of giant dolerite boulders, making it harder than nearby peaks. This boulder field demands careful climbing over irregular stone surfaces throughout much of the route.
