Alice in Wonderland, Dark ride in Fantasyland, Disneyland, California, US.
Alice in Wonderland is a ride in Fantasyland at Disneyland Park in California where guests travel in colorful caterpillar vehicles through multi-level sets of the story. The experience leads through indoor and outdoor areas with illuminated figures and elements from the 1951 film.
The installation opened in June 1958 and was among the first rides designed specifically for Disneyland. In the 1980s the scenes were completely renewed and three-dimensional characters replaced the earlier flat sets.
The ride takes its name from the protagonist in a 19th-century novel by English author Lewis Carroll and features characters such as the Cheshire Cat and the Queen of Hearts. Visitors experience a sequence of scenes with glowing colors under blacklight and moving sculptures.
Anyone arriving in a wheelchair must transfer into the vehicle as the caterpillars are not wheelchair-accessible. The route runs partly outdoors on a spiral track and then shifts into enclosed spaces with dim lighting.
The outdoor ramp descends in an illuminated spiral and forms an unusual visible part of the track before the ride shifts into darkness. Following an inspection in 2010, additional handrails were installed along these sections.
