Monsanto House of the Future, Experimental attraction in Disneyland, US
The Monsanto House of the Future was an experimental attraction in Disneyland, California, showing a cross-shaped building on pillars. Below the elevated structure lay a garden with a pond, while the rooms spread across four arms.
The attraction opened in 1957 and ran for ten years while twenty million guests walked through the rooms. It closed in 1967 when the vision of a plastic future in housing already seemed outdated.
The structure bore the name of its sponsor, a chemical company developing new plastics for everyday life at that time. Inside, visitors could see household devices considered revolutionary back then, such as microwaves and automatic cleaning systems.
Those interested in architectural history or the American postwar period will find only photographs and reports about the building today. The attraction no longer exists, but the spot in the park still recalls the experiment with new materials.
When workers tried to demolish the house, the wrecking ball bounced off the plastic shell. They had to spend two weeks cutting the structure into pieces because the material was so resistant.
