Big Thunder Ranch, Former petting zoo in Frontierland, Disneyland, California, US.
Big Thunder Ranch was a petting zoo and event venue in Frontierland at Disneyland, California, combining animals, Western-style structures, and outdoor spaces. The grounds spread across several areas with pens for different farm animals, a log cabin, and seating under shaded trees.
The site opened in 1986 on land previously occupied by the Mine Train Through Nature's Wonderland attraction. The facility closed permanently in January 2016 to allow construction of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge.
The name references the nearby Big Thunder Mountain Railroad roller coaster in the same themed area. Visitors could observe farm animals and interact with them in a way that has become rare in modern theme parks.
The area was accessible during park hours throughout the day and offered shade under large trees, making it comfortable on hot days. A dining section served barbecue dishes with chicken, pork, sausages, beans, cornbread, and seasonal desserts.
Mickey Moo, a Holstein cow with natural markings resembling Mickey Mouse, lived here from 1988 to 1993. This cow became a popular photo subject for guests who spotted the distinctive pattern on her coat.
